Mr. Grinspoon’s Girls – Episode 12 – Randomly Accessed Memories, Pt. 2

Today we’re continuing with Annie’s arc–which is narrated in first-person. So feel free to scoff at my attempts to read extra-dramatically, and let’s go!     In a cottage in an undisclosed location a girl sits alone, indulging her own memories. She has few of them to call upon, but for her, they represent life itself–for she is not permitted beyond the cottage walls. Ticking, thinking, she–the first of Grinspoon’s clockwork girls–tells her own story to herself, over and over…little knowing that the mysterious thing inside her, the bundle of metaoperations that she cannot identify, is responsible for it. However, she might be coming close to attaining that knowledge…      ...

Mr. Grinspoon’s Girls – Episode 10 – In Plain Sight

Today’s episode features a slight change in format! We’ll be wrapping up Allan’s first story arc, and then switching into first-person mode in order to meet a very special–some might say revolutionary–Grinspoon girl. I think the next arc will be all first-person, so feel free to laugh at my acting attempts!     Once upon a time–well, two years ago–four-year-old Allan Grinspoon “befriended” one of his father’s creations, an accounting model he named Simon. In time, Simon disappeared…but now he’s back, and acting quite strange. Lord Illumad, the royal inspector, doesn’t seem to know anything about it…but he does know a lot about Allan’s father, Nicholas....

Mr. Grinspoon’s Girls – Episode 9 – The Ghost in the Machine

Sorry for posting this a little bit late–I’ve been battling a cold for the last week or so. You might be able to hear the remnants of my sore throat on this recording–I didn’t take up smoking. I promise.     One of the great Thou Shalt Nots in the world of Cantamen is the use of magic to create anything resembling life–and thus, the fantastical machines created by Nicholas Grinspoon fall under regular royal scrutiny. Auditors from the capital of Olympia have arrived at Greenbriar for a surprise inspection…but is that their real intent? And why is Nicholas so nervous? His son is about to find out…       Podcast: Play in new window   The Mr. Grinspoon’s Girls banner and logo were...

Mr. Grinspoon’s Girls – Episode 8 – Insects and Gods

So, the birds in the recordings I’ve been doing? I tried occasionally going outside to chase them off the roof, but that technique no longer works–as one lucky little sparrow has built a nest directly outside my window. Oh well–they provide ambiance.     Little Allan Grinspoon’s not having a great childhood. His father ignores him, the machines he “befriends” go missing, and two of the Gods actually refused to speak to him during his Encounter. But excitement is in the air, as royal auditors from Olympia have arrived for a surprise inspection of his father’s mechanical creations. Although his mother, Fanny, seems spooked by something…       Podcast: Play in new window   The Mr....

Mr. Grinspoon’s Girls – Episode 7 – Encountering the Gods

The adventures with the microphone continue–that’s another post! Podcast #7 is the second episode in the Allen Grinspoon arc. As we’re about to learn, praying’s a little different in Cantamen…     In our previous episode, we jumped from a discussion about the origins of Nicholas Grinspoon to an exploration of his son, Allan’s, earliest years. Allan is a child of privilege, born into a world where his father’s mighty machines have always existed–but things are starting to take an odd turn. A turn that will affect Allan, as well as his father–and for the worse. Tell me…what would you do if a god turned its face from you? What would you do if that god refused to tell you why?    ...

Mr. Grinspoon’s Girls – Episode 6 – Stirrings of Consciousness

It’s time to move on to Allan! I’m very proud of this episode–I think it’s my personal favorite so far. For those looking to start listening, this is a great episode to leap in on!     The previous five episodes focused on the man who would become Nicholas Grinspoon. We learned about his background, his ability to manipulate the human soul, and his mechanical genius. Now we turn to his son, Allan–who will witness the rise of his father’s machines.     Podcast: Play in new window   The Mr. Grinspoon’s Girls banner and logo were designed by artist Bernardo Garcia.
