Blog Entry: Twisted Freaks Need Love, Too – Part III

And we’re back for the voting round!

For those of you coming in new to this contest, here’s the gist. A few weeks ago, I asked for suggestions for twisted, weird, freaky, disgusting creatures and concepts – things people could never imagine being presented as a YA romantic hero. Out of the many amazing suggestions, I chose five to build upon. Originally I was going to present these young gentlemen as one-page concepts, but I ended up writing four pages for each. That’s how amazing these ideas were to work with. I tried to take each one seriously and do a bit of world-building, too.

So now, you get to read and vote for your favorite twisted freak until February 21st! The gent who gets the most votes will snag the person who suggested him:

  • A signed copy of the Dearly, Departed audiobook – 17 hours of actors pretending to be my characters! (Yes, actors - there are five narrators, so the entire thing sounds like a vintage audio play.) I figured this was a little different, as the book’s been going out a lot.
  • Signed posters, bookmarks, stickers, whatever else I feel like throwing in there.
  • CANDY!
  • Maybe some other fun stuff, too? Hmm?

So, without further ado, here we go. Links to the individual stories are below, followed by the polling area. I hope you enjoy!

Camel spiders, suggested by Stella

Living brain, suggested by Flo

Cordyceps fungus, suggested by Bri M

Flesh-eating disease skeleton, suggested by Alyssa

Twisted earth elemental, suggested by Elie

Hey, Wow, you’re really good at this. I was amazed! And it was a really hard choice between The Brain in a Vat and Earth Elemental! I loved them all!

These were amazing! =) So well written, and the imagination and world building in each of them is amazing – even more so, when you consider the length of them. I think the camel spider was my favorite, though. He was adorable.

I love Klir! He’s such a sensitive soul. I figure spiders are really shy. XD

These were all so amazing, Lia! It was hard to pick my favorite. I really loved the spiders and the skeleton, and I think the Skeleton story was my favorite. Nicodemus Scaddin was very interesting. I hope you’ll continue this story some more!

Thanks! I’d love to develop a few of these further, they were really fun. If nothing else, they were great exercises in flash-writing – each took about 45 minutes.

These were all so fantastic! I’m just amazed that you managed to make 5 incredibly different and incredibly FUN stories in such a short period of time. These entrants are lucky that you turned their most disgusting into stories that make a… camel spider…skeleton… etc, great to read about on a quiet Valentine’s night.

(I voted camel spider because he was just so cute!)

I know, right? Also, think how handy he’d be around the house.

All of them were so amazing! They all had completely different plots and ideas, and each one was just as intriguing as the next. I am greatly curious about why Simone’s father is one of the Cordyceps, and I wonder about how a romantic relationship with a Cordycep would work out.Hmmm… Anyway, my favourites were definitely the Skeleton story and the Earth Elemental story. Emily’s curious demeanor and impulsiveness made me want to see how it may get her in trouble or – more importantly – closer to a certain Tree Man. ;) And Elysia’s wanting to be more than she is currently, and how she and Nicodemus met was amazing (any relationship that starts in a book store is bound to be amazing!) So obviously I voted for the latter. :P Loved ALL of them though. :D
