Tall, Dark, and Dead – 52 – Zombiemania

Title: Zombiemania
Year: 2008
Director: Donna Davies
Leads: Everyone!

Favorite quote: “Zombies are a no-guilt snack.”

Thoughts: Zombiemania is the first zombie documentary I’ve ever watched, and I really loved it. I’ve read/watched almost everyone interviewed for it, so it was great fun to be able to put faces to names. (I had no idea Max Brooks was so hot, personally. Wow.)

There was also a fair amount of philosophical discussion in the film, specifically about zombie behavior. The general opinion seemed to be that modern (post-Romero, cannibalistic corpse) zombies literally embody a certain type of freedom – the freedom to go with what your reptilian brain is telling you, to not have to filter your behavior through your higher mental faculties. I can respect this argument, but I also have to ask whether or not that’s truly “freedom.” I would argue, instead, that what they’re talking about is really “simplicity,” and it’s that same simplicity that make these zombies so powerful and frightening.

I really enjoyed watching this doc, though, and would heartily recommend it.
